EXPRESSIVE ARTS THERAPY
EXPRESSIVE ARTS THERAPY
Expressive Arts Therapy in NYC
Expressive arts therapy based in New York integrates music, creativity, movement, and embodied expression into psychotherapy to support emotional processing, nervous system regulation, trauma healing, and deeper self-understanding.
Expressive arts therapy offers a way to work that goes beyond just talking. For many people, emotions, memories, and internal states don’t fully translate through language alone. Creativity, music, and movement can open additional pathways for expression, processing, and integration.
Music Therapy and Creative Expression in Psychotherapy
We both studied music therapy before moving to NYC and draw from expressive arts approaches when they feel clinically supportive and aligned with your goals. Music therapy, as defined by the American Music Therapy Association, is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship, delivered by a credentialed professional. In practice, this means using music intentionally to support emotional expression, processing, regulation, and insight.

Creative Work That Supports Emotional Processing and Regulation in New York City
This work is always collaborative and optional. We never impose creative processes, but instead introduce them when they feel like they could help you access something that is difficult to reach through language alone.
For some clients, this might include:
Using rhythm or sound to stay grounded in somatic work
Using lyrics or songwriting to give shape to complex emotional experiences
Building playlists that reflect different parts of your emotional world
Using music to support emotional awareness and regulation
Therapy Without Pressure to Perform or “Be Artistic”
Expressive arts therapy at Rooted Therapy of NY is not about performance or artistic skill. It is about creating additional ways of listening to yourself. Over time, clients often find that creativity helps them access clarity, emotional release, and insight in ways that feel intuitive, embodied, and deeply personal.
Connecting With Yourself Through Creative Expression
At its core, this work is about expanding the ways you can connect with and understand your own experience, with music and creative expression as tools for reflection, regulation, and integration.
